Currently all barber licensing in Utah falls under the UT Cosmetology and Barber Board in Salt Lake City.
Utah Barber License Requirements
1,000 hours of training at a barber school
Apprenticeship accepted with notification of clientele. Any hours earned in barber school do not count toward the required 1,250 in apprenticeship. Apprentices may be compensated.
Completion of the National Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology (NIC) Barber Theory and Practical Examinations with a passing score of at least 75%.
Utah Barber License Renewal Requirements
Barber licenses expire during in September of odd years and will cost licensees $52. No continuing education is required for renewal.
Utah Barber License Reciprocity or Transfer
To transfer an out-of-state license, Utah requires a verification to be sent to the Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing. Applicants must meet Utah’s educational requirements or provide evidence of a combination of education and experience. This combination must equal 1,000 hours. Lastly, the applicant is required to meet the standard score on an equivalent examination. Applicants may then complete an application for their Utah license, which has a $60 fee. The application will not be accepted without verification or educational requirements.
