Currently all barber licensing in Montana falls under the Montana Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists in Helena.
Montana Barber License Requirements
- Barbers – 1500 Hours
- Barber Instructors – Barber License + 1 Year Work Experience + 600 Hours
Montana Barber License Renewal
Barber licenses and barber instructor licenses in Montana are renewed every two years on March 1. The fee to renew a barber license is $80, and it’s $95 to renew a barber instructor license.
Montana Barber License Reciprocity or Transfer
People who wish to transfer their barber licenses to Montana must hold a current active license in his or her home state. You must request verification of license history from each state in which you have a current, active license. You be at least 18 years or older and provide proof, such as a birth certificate or driver’s license. You must pass the Montana Bord approved Barber exam at 75% proficiency or higher (both written and practical). The board may consider exceptions for actively licensed barbers in good standing that have met the 1500 school hour requirements.
